A Brief History of Hieroglyphics Essay The word hieroglyph has been applied to the scripts of the Indus civilization and of the Hittites, who also possessed other scripts, in addition to the Mayan, the Incan, and Easter Island writing forms, and also the signs on the Phaistos Disk on Crete, but the strict meaning of the word is used only to describe the carvings on Egyptian monuments. The most ancient hieroglyphs can be dated back to the end of the 4th millennium BC. They describe scenes and are cut in relief, or into the stone, mostly in chapels or tombs. Although it is impossible to know, but these early signs are probably based on the same system that the later set of hieroglyphics, known as classical hieroglyphics is based. Hieroglyphic signs were representations of living beings or inanimate objects by simplistic drawings. Over the years, some of the representations fell out of meaning, such as clubs, which at one time were used as weapons, and other weapons took their place. But they glyph stayed. Sometimes the object described by the glyph completely fell out of daily use and the meaning eventually became lost or it was distorted beyond recognition. Always only a few people in a limited circle understood the script. Only those who needed the knowledge in their professions were able to acquire the task of writing and reading the glyphs. These people were, for example, officials, doctors, and priests. Since the glyphs were too complex for everyday use, hieratic script was developed. Easier abbreviated script was developed for writing by brush stroke on a medium such as papyrus. Classical hieroglyphics evolved through the need to identify a pictorial representation of an event, such as a hunt or a particular battle. Hieroglyphs were added to scenes to signify that the work of art was not just an unknown war or such, but a specific one. This also one of the first times that we see people interested in preserving their history for others to learn about in later times. It was this new attitude toward time and toward history as unique events in time led to the invention of hieroglyphic writing. Hieroglyphics dominated monumental and sacred writings and was accepted in the Greece until the situation was altered with the conversion of the area to Christianity in the nd and 3rd centuries AD. The new religion fought against the Egyptian polytheism and traditions, and with its victory, the Greek script triumphed. The ability to understand the script was lost for many hundreds of years until the failure of Napoleon’s invasion of Egypt turned up the Rosetta Stone on which was written the same statement in three languages, Classical hieroglyphics, Hieratic script, and Greek. With the discovery of thi s asphalt tablet, archeologists were finally able to begin to unlock the key to understanding the long dead written language of hieroglyphics.

Bridge to Terabithia† is set in rural Virginia in the mid-1970's. The story revolves around characters; the Aarons, the Burkes, the students and faculty in the elementary school. Jess Aaron, is one of the central characters. He has four sisters, two older and two younger leaving him in the middle. Brenda and Ellie are the older teenage sisters that have a strong bond with their mother and don’t pay much mind to Jess. Joyce Ann and May Belle are his little sisters that look up to Jess. Mr. Aarons is always away from home working in a city nearby leaving Mrs. Aarons to hold many of the responsibilities. Since she believes in the men taking care of the men jobs Jess always has work to do in place of his father. The girls never seem to have to do any work and Jess feels he is unappreciated and the black sheep of the family. The Burkes move from Washington D. C to rural Virginia. They are well off and move to the area to re-evaluate their family values. Leslie is the other main character who is looking for a sense of belonging and friendship. Bill and Judy are here parents that are writers. They are consumed with their work and don’t pay much attention until their book is completed. Jess and Leslie attend the same Elementary school where they become friends resulting from a race that Leslie won. The two become inseparable and have a special place in the woods called â€Å"Terabithia.† To get to their perfect imaginary world you must swing across the creek on a rope. The lake becomes flooded from the constant rainfall and starts to concern Jess. He continues to be quite and swing across the dangerous water since Leslie is so fearless and he doesn’t want to look like he is afraid of anything. Later, Jess’s music teacher invites him to spend a day in Washington D.C. while Leslie travels to Terabithia without him and the rope breaks and she drowns. Jess returns home that night to find out that his best friend Leslie is dead. Jess goes through the emotions of grieving, angry, to upset, from this incident. A few days later he returns to Terabithia so he can place a funeral wreath for Leslie. Without Jess knowing May Belle has followed him but cries for help since she was stuck in the creek.

Lack of Communication Essay

When you join together and form a relationship you become part of something greater. You must work together as a team if either partner disregards the relationship suffers. Given a desire and will to make things better it takes communication. Lack of communication in a relationship can make a person feel lonely and isolated. This could come from being busy with life, lack of love, and word vs. actions. Lack of communication only results in unsuccessful human alliances which cause grief not only to you as an individual, but to others as well. Many couples stop communicating with each other because each they are caught up with doing his/her own thing in life. Whether it is work hobbies, children, and school, among other things there is always an excuse. Just as you budget how you spend your money it is important to remember that budgeting in time for your relationship is important as well. Lack of involvement and communication increases distance in any relationship. If you don’t have quality time and communication your relationship and understanding will start to vanish. When you are no longer in love with your spouse then more than likely you are not communicating with each other. When you are not in love anymore it is a horrible feeling because you become unhappy and negative about the relationship. It’s difficult to realize that you just don’t feel the same way about the man/women you thought you wanted to spend the rest of your life with. Falling out of love is inevitable. So much of how we perceive love is what we have seen or read. Whenever you stop communicating you destroy the love that you have for one another. Moved by emotions and excitement of the situation, you can get carried away with words saying things that later will not be backed by actions. Actions speak louder than words. A person who wants to be in a relationship with you will show you with their actions consistently over time. Words are powerful and they can hurt, heal, build up or tear down, comfort or curse the relationship without the action behind it. Sometimes you come to a point where you may not have anything to talk about. Speaking from experience and research it is because you know each better than you did before. Now a days people believe in personal space, but sometimes too much space widens the gap between people. Express yourself to your mate talk about your problems, share your feelings with each other and cherish those moments of life together. When you take a close look at your relationship communication is the foundation that will strengthen your bond. Without this, your relationship will definitely not be a lasting one.
